Where should we stay.......Ku'damm or ??????

We%26#39;ve been to Berlin three times, have always stayed in the East in the Gendarmenmarkt area. Are we missing something by not having stayed on/near Ku%26#39;damm area?? We are trying to plan a long weekend getaway from London within the next month or so...where should it be? Potsdammer Plotz? Gendarmenmarkt? Friedrichstrasse? or Ku%26#39;damm?? any 4-5*hotel suggestions??

Thank you!

we recently posed a similar question and following advice stayed in the ku%26#39;dam area - at the swissotel and had a great time.

- got a very good rate via www.dhr.de

3 nights for £210 including breakfast.

there is also the new concorde hotel ( both 5 star) just opened Nov 05.

visit www.dhr.de and send an email saying when , how many people/rooms and the area and they will advise you of prices - the price we got beat everywhere else hands down for the period we stayed incliding the big internet companies expedia/ travelocity etc.

as you probably know the transport is excellent so wherever you stay is accessible.

the restaurants nearby were very good too ( try R23 restaurant very cheap to eat and a nice european old time bar feel to it )

If you haven%26#39;t already been to the ka de we shop on ku%26#39;dam, visit the food /deli court on the 6th floor ...quite simply amazing!!

good luck

Personally, I would not stay near the Ku%26#39;Damm, it is tacky and lacks any of the atmosphere of the new Centre of Berlin

I would recommend looking around Mitte, this is where the cntre of Berlin is moving, the Ku%26#39;damm is a tacky left over of past times.

Good Luck

I like the Intercontinental, the east wing rooms are modern and stylish, the street is fairly quiet but a few mins walk to the Kadewe and Kudam. A few mins on a bus or taxi takes you to Mitte. With luck you get a room with a view over the Tiergarted. I am planning going back for Easter and the rates start at 90 euro. Have fun wherever you stay

We recently stayed at the Hollywood Media Hotel which is on Ku%26#39;damm.It was a fab hotel. The room for the three of us was large and very comfortable. The staff were very friendly and all spoke good English. The breakfast was to die for-all very fresh hot and cold. The hotel is approx 10 min walk from ZooGarden or 2mins by taxi.We booked directly with the hotel and got a rate of 119 euro per room per night.

not sure that you could say all of Ku%26#39;dam is tacky! It has a lot of well renonwned and high quality shops.

Certainly at one end of the ku%26#39;dam there are a number of adult shops but to be honest we were only aware of that as we saw it on the bus tour - otherwise there was no need to be at the end of the ku%26#39;dam area and we would have been none the wiser!

if you search here on the forum you will see a number of threads for and against each area - have a search and see what you think!

good luck

Are you missing somthing by not having stayed around the Ku%26#39;Damm? I don%26#39;t think you can easily answer that question.

I partly agree with timffm about the Ku%26#39;Damm being tacky. A lot of buildings there were destroyed in the war so you have quite a few newer building around which are mainly from the 60%26#39;s and 70%26#39;s. At the time the architecture was thought to be great while by now you think how could somebody build something like that. :-) Anyway, I still think the Ku%26#39;Damm has its charme. Just wander in the side streets for a bit and you%26#39;ll find some really nice residential streets with heaps of nice cafes and restaurants (e.g. Savignyplatz, Bleibreustr., Grolmannstr. and Knesebeckstr.. The area around Friedrichstraße/Gendarmenmarkt might has more to offer when it comes to beautiful old buildings and sights but a lot of the restaurants there are - in my opinion - just overpriced. Why not stay around the Ku%26#39;Damm this time after having stayed in the Eastern part already? This way you will be able to find out which area you prefer. The area around the Ku%26#39;Damm is still lively in the evenings. As you know already Berlin has a pretty good public transport so it will never take you long to get anywhere.

We stayed at the Westin our other visits to Berlin, many because of location and we got a very good price. Prices are much higher for that property now and IMHO, it isn%26#39;t worth what they are charging. I%26#39;ve noticed they are sold out alot, wondering if they are on the bus tour route these days!! I was thinking of trying somwhere in the Potsdammer Platz area this time. If a person can afford it, the Ritz Carlton has a buy 3 night, get the 4th free special. Not sure I want to spend that kind of money though, have also looked at the Marriott there. Again, not sure, I can stay at those hotels in the US, would prefer something with a more local flavour I think.
