I would suggest you to take a train from Cologne to Würzburg (it%26#39;s faster and more comfortable than driving), pick up a car there and work your way down to the Alps.

Along the Romantic Road in Bavaria, the Residence in Wuerzburg, the walled town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and Neuschwanstein Castle near Fuessen are all wonderful places to visit. However, you don%26#39;t have to confine your travels to the Romantic Road, other nearby places off of it may be actually more pleasant to visit. Although not in Bavaria, Salzburg, a few kilometers insde of Austria, is also wonderful as it sits in the Alps and besides cultural things there, the wonderfully scenic Koenigsee area of Bavaria is only a few kilometers away. Ludwig II%26#39;s palace at Herrenchiemsee, an island in the Chiemsee, is nice and is his version of Versailles in which its hall of mirrors actually outdoes Versailles.
