Gastwerk, and Hamburg itself

We are going to be in Berlin in early June for like five days and were going to take a day in the middle and drive to Hamburg and spend on night at the Gastwerk. I%26#39;ve seen it on so many design hotel websites and it looks cool. Is it? And is Hamburg worth a side trip or should we just stay in Berlin. I like driving and I thought it would be nice to drive over to Hammy. Good idea?

I was also looking at staying at the SIDE hotel if we went but dang if it isn%26#39;t a boatload of money. It doesn%26#39;t look to be worth $250 a night.

Berlin is very interesting because of its particular history.

But going to Hamburg in addition to some days in Berlin is sure a good idea.

Hamburgs character is more %26quot;nordic%26quot; than Berlins (a little scandinavian or english).

I lived in both cities -Berlin is great because of its cultural opportunities, its dynamic art scene and innovative character (Music,Bars,Design). Berlin is interesting, not beautiful.

Hamburg is more pleasant.

There is a city-center on the Alster-Lake(clear definited in opposite to berlin, where there are some centers). For shopping inconvenient things, clothes, accessories you go to Caro-Quarter or Schanzen-Quarter: many small stores but first of all cafes, bars, very colourful and funny alternative quarters. Then there is Altona-Quarter, former danish town with the clutter of small streets. There is St.Pauli with all its bars and clubs (it´s not only a redlight-quarter!)-in the weakends nights much more crowded and loud then any place in Berlin.

There is the harbour area-directly in the city and for relaxing there are these great places on the banks of river Elbe, where you meet everybody on some mild summer evenings.

The Gastwerk hotel is quite well, but compared to the special offers the other luxury-design-hotels in Hamburg sometimes have its too expensive for a 4-Star hotel.

If you are lucky and search quite a time you can get eg the Dorint Sofitel für 125€ a duouble inc brekfast. Or the ROYAL Méridien for 115€ exc brakfast. The hotels are both really great. I visited them both, the Sofitel even twice.

The Sofitel has a better (more cental) location that is perfect for Shopping and sightseeing.

The Royal Méridien%26#39;s location is only really good if you can get a high floor room with Alster lake view. The hotel itsself is a perfect choise. The tops are the bed%26#39;s with sheeds of egyptian linen and the breakfeast in the panoramic resaurant on the 8th floor overlooking the alster.

Another minus of the gastwerk is, that it%26#39;s not thhat central located.

You should definitely come to %26quot;Hammy(?)%26quot;. It is very different to Berlin and more manageable to see in a couple of days. Take the lift or stairs to the top of the Michel and enjoy the city vista.

Can%26#39;t help you with hotel choice.
