Going for our first time in April.
1. We want to take a day and go to Dachau to see the concentration camp. From the main station - how do we get there?
2. The next day we want to go to Ludwig%26#39;s castles. Again, from the main station, how do we get there?
3. For getting back from these locations, do the reverse trains run as often as the outgoing trains?
I have not been able to get the planning tools to work on the websites. I%26#39;m just looking for a schedule of deptarture times in either direction from these two locations - does that sort of thing exist without the itinerary planner thing?

A big plus for visiting Munich is the Bayern ticket. In case you haven%26#39;t heard about it it is a train ticket that costs 17euros for one person or 24euros for up to 5 people. This ticket is good for travel all though out Bavaria for the day, (the day starts at 9am M-F and 12-12 Sat and Sun) 12 of us traveled with 3 Bayern tickets to Fussen (this is the town you go to by train for Neuschwanstein). It cost 6euros each there and back. It also covers buses and subways in Bavaria for that day. You can go to Salzburg with this ticket as well. One of Ludwigs castles, in Chimsee, is on the way to Salzburg. On the way from Salzburg to Munich we stopped in Prien and left our luggage in a locker. Went and saw the castle then got back on the train and made it to Munich by 3:30 pm.
There are only 2 draw backs to the Bayern ticket
1- during the week you have to wait until 9am to take the first train.
2- you can%26#39;t use an ICE train.
Neither of these were an issue for us. Going to Fussen there are no ICE trains and the train to Salzburg the ICE train wasn%26#39;t much faster. The only time an ICE train would have been nice was when we went from Nurnberg to Munich, but again it wasn%26#39;t a big deal.
The only day that we wanted to travel before 9am was when we went to Neuschwanstein. You have a better chance of seeing both castles if you get the 8:50 am train. So we went on a Saturday so that we could travel anytime that day. We also loved the freedom to jump on and off trains for the day with out having to plan ahead.
You really don%26#39;t need to get a schedule on line now. The schedules are posted all over the train station and most hotels have train schedules. There are alot of trains to all your destinations.

There are 4 day trips that you could do on RE or RB trains with the Bayern Ticket. Salzburg, the castles near Schwangau, the Eagles Nest near Berchtesgaden or the Zugspitz near Garmish.

For the castles input From: München Hbf To: Hohenschwangau, Schwangau. Allow an entire day to tour Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein Castles. The ticket office will schedule the “English” tour times far enough apart so that you can do both. It is quite a hike up to the castles so consider the horse drawn carriage up to Hohenschwangau and the bus up to Neuschwanstein. For the Zugspitz input From: München Hbf To: Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Zugspitz is the highest mountain in Germany, but only consider going there when the weather will be bright and sunny or you will spend a lot of $ to be in the clouds and see little. You can get close to most of Ludwig II%26#39;s palaces by train except for Linderhof. If you want to see it, you could drive and try to see the two palaces at Hohenschwangau too on the same trip, which might be possible if you went on the earliest tours, but would make for a very tight schedule. Check with the ticket office for the palaces in Hohenschwangau if it might be possible and their tour times and also with Linderhof for their opening hours. You can make tour rservations for the Hohenschwangau castles through the internet. Linderhof with its Swan Grotto is many visitors%26#39; favorite of his palaces.

A good deal for any of these trips is the Bavaria Ticket (EUR 25,00).
This mini group day ticket covers also the buses from Füssen to Hohenschwangau and the ones to Linderhof castle.
Not covered are the boats on lake Chiemsee to the Herrinsel island.
You may want select at the DB timetable as means of transport %26quot;only local transport%26quot; as the Bavaria Ticket covers no IC/EC or ICE trains.
3. Just use the DB timetable to check for the reverse connection.
E.g. if a line has hourly service this means of course 1 train per hour in each direction.
