Day Trips from Berlin?

What would you suggest as destinations for day trips from Berlin?

Thank You!

There are many posibilities, it depends what you are interested in. So when you like to see some nature around Berlin, there are some lakes and the Märkische Schweiz, a kind of nature resort. Or you make a day trip in the Spreewald (Spree wood), it%26#39;s region with many canals where the residents mostly don%26#39;t use roads but boats and you can see there the folk of Sorbians, a national minority living in Germany, they often still wear beautiful traditional costumes.

And there is of course a trip to Potsdam with the amazing castle Sanssouci, it%26#39;s only a short trip by train.

There are plenty of interesting places just outside of Berlin to keep your occupied should you fancy a break from the bustle of Berlin for a day.

To the south-west of Berlin lies the city of Potsdam. It is full of beautiful palaces and parks. Unfortunately the inner-city itself may prove to be a little depressing owing to the bland Soviet architecture left behind from the days of occupation by the USSR after the Second World War. Potsdam indeed played a vital role in the decision to place the city in the control of the Soviets, for it was the host of the conference between the victorious allied nations to decide Germany%26#39;s fate. You can visit the table, around which Joseph Stalin (USSR), Winston Churchill (and later Clement Attlee) (UK) and Harry Truman (USA) sat for this historic event at the Cecilienhof Palace.

Potsdam can be reached by taking the S-Bahn (S1) from central Berlin. Berlin transport tickets cover the journey so long as the are valid for all three zones (A, B and C).

To the north of Berlin, in Oranienburg, the former Nazi concentration camp of Sachsenhausen can be found. It is nowadays open to the public as a museum. You can see replicas of the barracks, as well as the infamous gate which greeted all inmates on their entry to the camp marked with the words %26#39;Arbeit Macht Frei%26#39; (%26#39;Work Sets You Free%26#39;), and watch towers and cremation ovens.

Again, this can be reached on S-Bahn line S1 (travelling in the opposite direction to Potsdam) and also lies in zone C.

Berlin has plenty of lakes and waterways outside of the city centre. The lake known as Wannsee (SW Berlin) even had a make-shift beach with beach huts and sun beds. On a warm day you might think you were in the south of Spain!

First choice would be Potsdam as it is easily reached by public transport. Other nice places are Waren an der Müritz (Mecklenburgische Seenplatte - an area with heaps of lakes), Rostock and/or Warnemünde, Spreewald (www.spreewald.de - I think)
