Should we stay in Frankfurt or Dusseldorf for the World Cup?

Hello, I am part of a group of five persons coming to Germany for The World Cup in June. We are going to matches in Dortmund and Nuremberg. We decided to stay in Frankfurt to maximise the amount of German cities that we can see during the world Cup. However we are not finding any accommodation. Someone suggested that we should look for a Bed and Breakfast on the outskirts of Frankfurt. But I was thinking that perhaps we should stay in Dusseldorf, since none of the matches would be played there. Any suggestions or recommendations would be very, very, welcome.

Although I don%26#39;t need a room, I%26#39;ve been investigating them in the Stuttgart area. There were a few rooms avalable for short periods, and none where I (if as a tourist) would want to stay. I even looked into rooms in a nearby city outside of the local area with no success. Five people will only compound the problem. Therefore, I think that finding a room will be very difficult and should be booked as soon as possible if you can find one. Some hotels do not have internet access and booking, therefore there may possibly be accommodations, but contacting them by phone or fax from Trinidad might cost you a fortune.

As you will need to travel a bit anyway, you should check for hotels which are further away from the stadiums. I think a good advice would be to check the stops of the high speed trains (ICE) between Cologne and Nuremberg (I%26#39;m thinking about Koblenz, Siegburg/Bonn, Würzburg, maybe Aschaffenburg. All of these cities are medium-sized and worth a visit) and look out for hotels in these cities. Düsseldorf will not be easy, because it is too close to Gelsenkirchen/Schalke, Dortmund and Cologne, whereas Frankfurt has a World Cup stadium itself.

Okay, so I will check Koblenz, Siegberg/Bonn and Wurzburg. I know it would not be easy being a group of 5, but we want to stick together, never having travelled to Germany before, and we know how football matches can be a bit rowdy.

Try Montabaur , nice town with ICE Station between Frankfurt and Cologne

Try Hotel bookings with www.hrs.de

I was like sapodillabrown, that%26#39;s got to be a fellow Trini.

My brother and I are also planning to make the trip once we get game tickets (fingers crossed). Go Soca Warriors! Looking for a place around Frankfurt. Some other posters also said we should try Mannheim and Heidelburg. Still looking.

I actually have a room reserved in Berlin that I made before the draw. So worse case scenario is train from Berlin!

Let me know if you get through anywhere.

Laters.

TTraveller, I found the suggestions via this forum to be extremely useful. I have located decent looking hotels in Wurzburg and Koblentz. I think we will stay in Koblentz because of its proximity to the Rhine. We just need to figure out how to get from Frankfurt to Koblentz on June 8th and that should not be a problem. We have applied for match tickets and confirmed travel arrangements. Yes, I am a Trini to the Bone.

Koblenz seems to be a very good idea IMHO, too, especially during the world cup. Direct trains to Frankfurt approx 1,5 hours, direct trains to Cologne (1 hour), direct to Dortmund/Gelsenkirchen (1.5 - 2 hours) and to Kaiserslautern (one transfer, 2.5 hours) in case you%26#39;re interested in the TT games. Koblenz has a cosy old town with pubs and restaurants, the river mosella and rhine give you plenty of opportunities.

If you stick to Koblenz, the little village called Winningen at the river mosella with its 300-400 year old houses and lots of family-run vineyards and wine-cellars of is in my opinion one of the loveliest places in Germany. 10 minutes by train or an hour by boat. It might even be an idea to take a look for accomodation in Winningen for one or two nights. Try google! They are mainly budget, but nevertheless it is definitely worth a trip. Had people over from England, the States and Italy in Germany a couple of times and the simply always loved Winningen, it%26#39;s a must, especially since the main %26quot;season%26quot; is from late summer to autumn down there, so June is just about perfect.

Koblenz sounds good. If you find the time, do a Rhine river cruise by boat south to Rüdesheim. This is one of the touristic highlights in Germany. Have fun!

Ok, I have noted Winningen and the river cruise since I always think its best to follow recommendations instead of spending hours poring over tourist brochures. I hope to see the matches in Dortmund and Nuremberg, and vist Berlin before we leave.
