Do you know Fincherinsel Strasse?

Hi,

I am considering an apartment on Fincherinsel , near Gendarmenmarkt. It seems it is in a skyscraper building, (possibly a hotel complex or serviced apartments?)

If you have any idea what this building is like or the area in general, esp fincherinsel, i woudl b egrateful for any comments:)

Thank You.

Deciding where to stay in Berlin is a nightmare as there is so much choice and having never been means i do not know if a plce / area is good or not! Appreciate your help:)

I guess you mean Fischerinsel. This is very central. This is the eastern end of the Spreeinsel. At the other end of this island there is the famous Museumsinsel.

On the right bank of the Spree you have the Berliner Dom, the Palace of the Republic*) and the old Royal Stables (Marstall). Left from the Marstall you can see a higher and a few less high skyscrapers. At least a few stories more than the normal Berlin buildings (you can see some on the left bank) with 5-6 stories.

*) The Palace of the Republic will be torn down and evtl. some day the old royal palace will be rebuilt at this location.

Thanks abalada. Do you think it is a good spot for a tourist to be based?

Don%26#39;t make rocket science out of finding a place for you in Berlin.

If the place (the Spreeinsel island) was good for centuries for the Prussian kings/German emperors - why should it not be a suitable location for a tourist?

I%26#39;m sure royalty didn%26#39;t have to rely on public transport:):)

However, I take your point:)

Still confused though........

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palast_der_Republik

was however used by %26quot;workers and farmers%26quot; ;-)

And the royalty had in Potsdam their own train station.

The stop (today: Park Sanssouci) is still in use, only the Kaiserbahnhof (emperor%26#39;s station) itself is now used as DB Academy.

We visited the Märkisches Museum which is just across the canal from Fischerinsel and I found the area quite bleak, and quiet even during the day so I%26#39;m not sure I%26#39;d feel very safe at night. It%26#39;s nothing like the other end of the island where the museums are. Fischerinsel was a modern GDR development with various towers, not particularly attractive.

Not sure which site you%26#39;re using. We stayed for a week last Easter in a wonderful apartment on Novalisstrasse in Mitte (near Oranienburger Tor station) booked through www.123berlinzimmer.de. Good area as so many sights are within easy walking distance. The website gives you lots of choice in Mitte and elsewhere.

Hello .... like someone said, Fischerinsel is a bit bleak .... that part of Berlin isn%26#39;t so attractive, it%26#39;s mostly built up with new buildings. The Wall used to go through not far from this area and this section of city - Mitte bordering on Kreuzberg is kind of dreary looking, central but has the feeling of being on the fringes. I don%26#39;t think it is especially dangerous (my dog and I have walked through that area after dark, no problem) but there are definitely many nicer places to live, unless you like the barren high-rise look :) .

I live in Charlottenburg and love it here, I%26#39;ve also lived in Prenzlauer Berg and that is really nice too, but getting very expensive. Otherwise I%26#39;d recommend Friedrichshain or Schöneberg (south of Nollendorfplatz). Old buildings (altbau) are much more charming than new buildings (neubau) but if you need a furnished flat then probably that is more often found in a new building. Enjoy Berlin!
