My nephew is going to be in Germany for almost 4 months for school ,is there anything he needs other than his passport and of course money ? I don%26#39;t know if he needs something special to stay in the country so long. Thanks in advance

He%26#39;ll need some kind of permission to stay that long from the police - an %26quot;Aufenthaltserlaubnis%26quot; or such. The institution he is studying with should be able to inform him in advance on how to proceed.
He%26#39;d also appreciate a calling card from his rich uncle, I%26#39;m sure.

He will need a residence visa (Aufenthaltstitel) available from a city office in the city he is staying after arrival. If he is bringing electrical items requiring 110v, buying the necessary transformer and plug adapter is much cheaper in the US. As to phone calls, our newspaper (Stuttgarter Zeitung) once a week publishes the access numbers to use to get the cheapest calling rate around the world, the US usually being about 1 cent/minute.
As an American living in Stuttgart, I know that some food items aren%26#39;t (readily) available in Germany which I bring back with me when visiting the US. However, it is impossible for him to know which items these are ahead of time. But if there is some snack food he can%26#39;t live without, I suggest that he probably should take some with him.

Thank you both for your response ,it helps alot. The phone card is an exellent idea.

As to phone cards, many may block access to places with cheap international rates. This happened to me on a recent stay in a hospital. If your nephew can use someone%26#39;s (fellow student%26#39;s) phone at their house, they should have no trouble making these connections, and perhaps could pay that person extra for the use of their phone.

marcopolko,Thanks for that info ,he will be staying in a dorm at the college so I really don%26#39;t know the phone situation. When he went in high school as an exchange student he could use the host family%26#39;s phone so this is all new to us.

Our son is studying in Frankfurt right now. He has been there 6 months. He needed his passport, proof of financial means, health certificate, and he took a criminal records check but I don%26#39;t think was asked for it. Upon landing your nephew must apply for a residency permit and he can apply for a student visa to extend beyond the 3 month travel regulations. Health insurance is required. Your nephew%26#39;s school should be able to provide assistance with all this. Good websites to check are: www.daad.de/ and www.justlanded.com. Good luck!
