High Speed trains between Berlin and Hamburg

I heard there is a high speed train that goes from Berlin to Hamburg in 90 minutes. Does anyone know anything about this or what it is called or where I can find schedule information? We are goind to be in Berlin in June and are going to Hamburg for one day and night and can%26#39;t decide between driving and taking a train. It is June 7 and 8 and I know that the World Cup is around that time and area and wonder if that might be traffic for driving as well. The only problem with a train is it would limit freedom to drive at our own pace or stop off at Potsdam or whatever. All you German geniuses give me a hand please. Thanks!

ICE trains (InterCityExpress) only need 90 mins from Berlin to Hamburg - there is one train running every hour.

Additionally there are some EC trains (EuroCity) and IC trains (InterCity) which need about 2 hrs for the journey from Berlin to Hamburg. Ticket for IC and EC is cheaper than the ICE ticket.

Train is the fastest and most convenient option on this relation.

None of those trains stops at Potsdam though. From Berlin you could take the urban rail (S-Bahn) or a local train to Potsdam. In order to get to Hamburg you would need to go back to Berlin to catch a ICE/IC/EC train.

Hamburg + Potsdam is totally unrealistic in one day.

Potsdam can be easily reached by local public transport from Berlin.

A day ticket for Berlin (zones Berlin AB) is EUR 5,80.

A day ticket for Berlin+Potsdam (zones ABC) is EUR 6,00.

ICE with normal tickets (no rail pass, no discount cards) is quite expensive. Berlin to Hamburg and return is EUR 116,00.

The problem with all other means of transport is that they are much slower and leave you barely time for Hamburg.

Maybe we%26#39;ll just skip Potsdam then. I%26#39;ve already booked the hotel in Hamburg, so we%26#39;re going there for sure, just have to decide how to get there I guess. The high speed train sounds like the best option, despite the cost, but that is awfully pricey. Maybe renting a car would be smarter.

There are cheaper alternatives to the ICE:

-IC train (same route, lower speed, 2 h one way; costs 48 EUR one way instead of 58)

-local trains (different route, about 3-4 hours; if you travel on a weekend up to 5 persons can use the local trains for 30 EUR flat fare - Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket)

-Bus: the Hamburg-Berlin relation is the only one in Germany with a frequent bus service; see www.berlinlinienbus.de, about 3.5 hours one way

-renting a car; a possibility too, also around 3 h one way.

Potsdam is really worth a visit if you are in Berlin for 4 or 5 days total (easy day trip).

My only experience of ICE train Berlin-Hamburg (I was flying home from Hamburg)was last summer and hopefully a freak occurrence, otherwise why pay all that extra money.... Train came into Zoo station 10 mins or so late from Prague and went slower and slower, and in the end it took over an hour extra to get to Hamburg. Got to check-in by the skin of my teeth (though in the end it tuned out the plane was late arriving too!).

If this was a train from Prague, it was an EC train. Definitly not an ICE train, as these trains can%26#39;t operate to/from Prague.

That does however not meant that their can%26#39;t be a problem also with these trains or the tracks. Like there could be traffic jams on the roads.

I took the ICE several times: it is defentiely the best choice. A little more expensive but worth it. You take at least an extra hour or so to drive yourself. And it goes from city cente to city entre...

Yes Abalada you%26#39;re right and I was wrong. The train to Hamburg between 12noon and 1pm is an EC (the one the hour before or the hour later wd have been ICE). Mattkorey needs to be aware of that fact too: ICE runs every two hours; the train between is IC/EC and takes just under 2 hours (all being well).

You guys have sold me on the ICE, the only issue is that we are staying at the Gastwerk hotel in Hamburg and it turns out that it is about 30 minutes or so out of the city center. So it may end up just being easier to drive than to have to find a way to get to the hotel. Although, when I contacted the hotel they told me that some of the ICE trains stop at Altona Bahnhof which is only five minutes away and others stop at Hauptbahnhof which is 30 minutes away. Sounds a bit confusing to me and dunno if I want us to try and pull our luggage around if we go to the wrong spot. It would be nice to have the extra almost three hours in times savings counting there and back. I%26#39;ll have to consider it I guess.
