Waldhotel Degerloch

I am thinking about staying at the Waldhotel Degerloch hotel in Stuttgart and was wondering if anyone knew anything about it? Another option is the Apart-Hotel. If anyone has any information on either of these lodgings it will be greatly appreciated.

Waldhotel Degerloch is fairly remote from central Stuutgart but probably less than 10 minutes by U-bahn. It is at the Waldau stop of the U-7 which means it is remote by the TV tower, ce skating rink, forest, and soccer fields used by lower division teams. If you are traveling in winter, it will be much colder there and would be much more likely to have snow than down in the valley in which central Stuttgart sits (200-300 meters higher). Living in Stuttgart, I%26#39;ve never stayed there, but in my book of Stuttgart hotels it looks nice.

If the Apart Hotel is the Apart-Business Hotel in Plieningen, it is at the end of the long U-7 route, and probably about 30 minutes to central Stuttgart.

If your goal is to be in or near central Stuttgart, I would recommend staying at the City Hotel which is near our apartment where we always recommend our visitors to stay if we can%26#39;t house them ourselves. It%26#39;s slightly more expensive than the Apart and considerably less than the Waldhotel. It is about a 5 minute walk to the absolute center of Stuttgart (Schlossplatz) and about a 10 minute walk to the main train station, and served by 4 U-bahn lines, including the U-7 if that is important to you. (I can recommend less expensive and more expensive central hotels if you are interested.)

Thanks a lot for the information marcopolko (both in this thread and others in the Stuttgart forum).

I am looking for a hotel with vacancies during Australia%26#39;s game in Stuttgart on the 22nd of June (planning to stay from the 20th-24th), and the waldhotel degerloch is one of very few that looks nice with rooms still available. I am aware that it is about 5 miles outside the centre of Stuttgart, but this won%26#39;t be a problem aslong as there is a train station near the hotel (which I think there is?). Would staying at the waldhotel degerloch bring me closer to the Gotttlieb-Daimler Stadion, or is it in the opposite direction from the city? I also plan to visit the Porsche Museum.

My other options are Mercure Stuttgart City Center, which is a bit more expensive, the Novotel Stuttgart Nord, and the Mo Hotel. Any information on these properties would also be appreciated.

I%26#39;ve only been to Waldau a few times, where the Waldhotel is, and I must have seen it, but I can%26#39;t recall for sure. It%26#39;s hard getting more than a block or two away and still have buildings from the Waldau stop on the U-7. This hotel is in a normally very quiet part of Stuttgart, actually near the forest as the name suggests (I don%26#39;t know about what it is like if they%26#39;re playing local soccer games, but that is, I think, extremely unlikely during the world cup). The hotel is in the SE part of Stuttgart, and the stadium is in the NE part neccessitating traveling to the city center and making one change at either Charlottenplatz or the main train station, which two of your other choices will require also.

My Stuttgart hotel directory put out by the tourist information office does not have a listing for the Mo Hotel. The other two hotels are Accor Hotels. The Mercure Hotel Stuttgart City Center is NOT in the city center but close. It is in an area one U-bahn stop north of the train station where there is little to see and probably do (large empty area of cleared abandoned freight yards on the east side). However, it is the only choice of your hotels where you could actually walk into the real center of Stuttgart. The Novotel Stuttgart North (really NW) is in fairly remote Stammheim best known for its high security prison for terrorists. The hotel itself might be OK, but their directions require a journey by S-bahn and then by bus to reach the hotel, and the picture of it suggests that it is usually used by people with a car. However, it is fairly close to the Porsche museum (I%26#39;ve never visited because I%26#39;ve always been told by most people that it will be a disappointment - however they%26#39;re bulding a new one that will open in several years), which I really find immaterial as it is also easily reached from the other hotels.

Given your choices, I definitely would stay at the Waldhotel Degerloch, I believe it is the nicest of your choices and fairly convenient. If there is too much crowding associated with downtown Stuttgart and the game itself for your tastes, at least you can take a pleasant quiet walk in the woods, and with the excellent public transport you can get to and from downtown Stuttgart in a few minutes.

Enjoy your stay in Stuttgart.

Another thing you might be able to help me out with marcopolko is a good pub/bar in Stuttgart. Are you aware of any pubs in Stuttgart that are popular amongst English speaking tourists, because I would like to find somewhere that will be showing the world cup with English commentary. Obviously I don%26#39;t plan to spend my 4 days in Stuttgart in the pub watching football, but it would be handy to know of a pub that suits my needs before I arrive.

I%26#39;ve done some research and Zum Paulaner (Calwerstr 45, 70173 Stuttgart) and Mathaser (GeiBstr 12, 70173 Stuttgart) both look very nice. Do you know if either of these are near the main train station or any other stop on the U-7 route?

|||

As to bars, we don%26#39;t go out drinking often, so I can%26#39;t help you much. The U-7 goes to Charlottenplatz which is closest to Mathaser (you could transfer there and get a little closer, but it is probably just as fast to walk). It will be 4-6 blocks away in a southerly direction. By the way, it is on Geiss-strasse, what you are taking to be a B is a double %26quot;s%26quot;. The closest stop to Zum Paulaner is the next stop Schlossplatz. It is again south (away from train station) and Calwerstrasse is two streets over to your right after going down a few streets. The Australian Restaurant Sydney%26#39;s is nearby. (You might like to ask for advice there. There are 100-200 Australians living in Stuttgart.) This area is full of bars and restaurants, and both places are within the pedestrianized area.

There are several Irish and English Pubs in Stuttgart: Biddy Early%26#39;s Irish Pub (www.biddyearlys.com) Marienstrasse 28 (similar area); o%26#39;reilly%26#39;s irish pub (www.oreillys.de) Reuchlinstrasse 27 (similar area); George %26amp; Dragon (www.george-and-dragon-english-pub.com) in Hotel Intercontinental Willy-Brandt-Strasse 30 (U7 to Charlottenplatz- transfer to U1,U2 or U4 headng north - e.g. Fellbach tunnel but not necessarily train, and then first stop Staatsgallerie).

On the Schlossplatz (same U-bahn stop name) there will be a large screen with the games and also entertainment. Bars should be open 24 hours a day during the world cup. At our apartment we have Eurosports in an English version without having a special TV package, so your hotel might also have a sports channel in Englsh, though you may prefer watching the games with others. E-mail the hotel and inquire.

Thanks again for all the fantastic information marcopolko.

I%26#39;ve also found some rooms available at the Hotel Centro (Buchsenstrasse 24 70174 Stuttgart). Looks basic but is quite cheap and seems fairly central. Any information on this hotel would be great.

|||

I personally don%26#39;t know the Hotel Centro, but it should be centrally located three blocks west of the main pedestrianized street in Stuttgart, Koenigstrasse. It probably is on a pedestrianized street across the busy Theodor-Heuss-Strasse from the main pedestrianized zone where the street continues. On my map #24 is in the center of the block there, but with the numbering system #25 isn%26#39;t necessarily across the street. A building with one number difference is half a block away across the street from our building, which possibly could place it on T-H-S. The only thing I would be concerned about is possible noise if your room backs on this busy street, the hotel is not air-conditioned and the weather is hot. (The high temperatures in summer in Stuttgart can vary greatly from 10-40C, so be prepared for either.) Anyways, the hotel should be 2 short blocks from an S-bahn stop which will take you to the stadium (S1) and 5-6 short blocks to Schlossplatz. I think that the price will be fairly indicative of what the hotel is like.

|||

I was curious about the Hotel Centro so I just got back from taking a walk across town to see it. I think you%26#39;ve found a winner. It%26#39;s not on the corner of the busy street but one street further over on the corner of a side street. The outside was freshly painted, but I couldn%26#39;t get inside, as you need a key, at least fairly early in the morning. The hotel appears to be on the upper floors above a restaurant, and nextdoor is also a typical doener-pizza restaurant if you%26#39;re interested in inexpensive food. An entrance to the S-bahn (Stadtmitte)is within 50 meters, and actually is the easiest way to cross Theodor-Heuss-Strasse exiting by the entrance across it. To get to the stadium, take the S-1, the Esslingen old town center is further past the stadium on it and definitely is worth visiting. The Porsche museum is accessible by the S-6 (Neuwirtshaus-Porscheplatz), and Weil der Stadt at the end of this line is an enjoyable place to visit for a few hours. The S-4 or S-5 will take you to Ludwigsburg and Germany%26#39;s largest perfectly preserved baroque palace (Swabian Versailles). The only thing that I really find wrong with the location is no U-bahn access, but any of the 6 S-bahn lines will take you to the next stop at the Hauptbahnhof (railway station) and access to 6 of the U-bahn lines.

Please post a message here after your stay about how you liked Stuttgart and the hotel.

Now I%26#39;m curious about the Waldhotel. I should go to Waldau in a couple of weeks, and I think I will look for it.

Thanks again for the helpful information marcopolko. I%26#39;m sure if other residents of Stuttgart are half as helpful as you are we will have a great time! I emailed the waldhotel on the 1st of Feb to see if there were still rooms available. I haven%26#39;t had a reply yet, which probably means there isn%26#39;t. I better get in touch with the Centro A.S.A.P., because it seems like there are very few rooms left in Stuttgart for the dates that I wish to visit.
