Area around train station seedy or OK?

I am trying to find a hotel for 4 of us for 4 nights the end of July- we will only have 3 days and want to spend 1 in Munich and take 1 day to go to Austria and 1 day sighseeing around perhaps Castles or historic sites. Is this a bad area to stay inand what is a good area or hotel for under 400E a night. Help!

As long as you stay right around the Hauptbahnhof or toward Karlsplatz you should be good to go.

Hi traelluvr,

seeing that you come from NY the area around the Hauptbahnhof should be like the Hamptons for you.

No seriously now - its not like in some other German cities such as Berlin or Hamburg where that area woulb be shady. Its not the nicest but nothing to worry about at all.

There should be quite a few Hotels for 400 € a night (thats a lot - you could get a 5 star for that 4 Seasons Kempinski is only 180 per night !

Check out Hotels.com they have some really good deals.

Have fun !

It%26#39;s been years since I stayed there, but we once stayed in a hotel directly across the street from the train staton. We found it a convenient area with really nothing against staying there.

I am actually from a small town in Western NY- no where near the Big Apple- so I really am a little concern about safety. Any recomendations for places? The 400E is for 2 rooms and we have found this is about what is necessary to pay to have decent lodging- although Florence was a bit cheaper.

As said in another post the area around the H/B is not the nicest but I have stayed there many times and had no probs at all. Munich is a very safe city compared to others and would have no hesitation of recommending the area to anyone. You have the added conveinence of the train station on your doorstep to get around. Last hotel we stayed was the Le Meridian, got a great deal off their own website, good hotel would recommend. But there are plenty others (4*+) in the area. You will enjoy Munich!

Munich is one of the safest big cities on the planet. The area around the Hauptbahnhof is OK.

As others have stated, Munich is safe. The area by the hauptbahnhof is busy, with the busses, cars, and pedestrians going to and from it. We walked from our hotel to the train station several times at night and felt totally safe. We stayed at Hotel Royal on Schillerstrasse, only a 5 minute walk to the Hauptbahnhof.

Venere has a nice map feature that will show you the hotels near the hauptbahnhof/train station. If you stay in bahnhof nord or bahnhof sud, you will be close to the train station. Just click on the bahnhof nord or sud part of the general map and the website will zoom in on what hotels are in that area. Enter your dates you will be staying and it will give your available hotels in that area. Make sure you read the reviews. I saw 2 star to 4 star hotels available from 69-144 euros a night for 1 double room.

I would echo all of the above. The area is fine and proxmity to local transportation excellent.

We usually stay at the Hotel Europäischer Hof which is located directly across the street - south of the Hauptbahnhof. It is pleasant, economical, breakfast is fabulous but the standard rooms are rather small so we upgrade to Comfort class. http://www.heh.de/e/default.htm

You might also consider the Hotel Excelsior. www.summithotels.com/hotel_horizontal.cfm…

A comment on the Excelsior Hotel, stayed there with family in the month of July a while back, never again! No aircon and the rooms were stiflingly hot with only three fans for the whole hotel! Also quite noisy, so you could not keep the windows open at night, just a comment!

With this budget (200€/night/room) you can probably get a room at Le Meridien or Dorint Sofitel Bayerpost.

Check their websites:
