Reserving train seats

I anticipate being in Germany for a few weeks, arriving over the German Labor Day Weekend April 29 to May 1. Is the holiday weekend like the US where many people are traveling? If so can I and should I purchase reserved seating for my second class train tickets, or is reserve seating only for 1st class? I plan to travel from the Frankfurt Airport to Rothenburg on the 29th and from Rothenburg to Fussen on the 1st and had not previously planned on reserved seats. Should I expect massive crowding and need the reserved seats for my group of 4 adults?

I wouldn%26#39;t worrry about resereving seats.I doubt if some of the trains you will be taking will even have reserved seats, like Steinach to Rothenburg or Buchloe to Fuessen.

You can reserve seats also in 2nd class as well, but only on far distance trains (IC/EC, ICE). On local trains (S-Bahn, RB, RE, IRE) seat reservations are not possible.

Seat reservation is EUR 3,00 per seat and leg. If you buy it online together with a ticket it is EUR 1,50.

If you want to save money stick to local trains.

As the 29.04.2006 is a Saturday you could use the Happy-Weekend-Ticket for Frankfurt Airport to Rothenburg. EUR 30,00 for 1-5 persons (thus with 4 persons just EUR 7,50 pp).

Frankfurt Airport to Rothenburg on local trains is 3:48 compared to 2:41/2:49 using ICE/IC (EUR 40,00/36,00 pp).

From Rothenburg to Füssen you can use the Bavaria Ticket, which covers all local public transport in Bavaria. EUR 25,00 for 2-5 persons. On weekdays (Mo-Fr) only valid past 9am - with the exception of public holidays, like the 01.05.2006

Rothenburg to Füssen needs mostly 4,75-5 hours. No difference if you stick to local trains or not.

You buy the Happy-Weekend-Ticket and the Bavaria-Ticket best from ticket machines. At the counter both tickets are EUR 2,00 more expensive.

DB timetable

From: FRA Airport

To: Rothenburg ob der Tauber

To: Fuessen

If you plan to use the Happy-Weekend-Ticket or the Bavaria-Ticket select as means of transport %26quot;only local transport%26quot;.
