I would like to plan a trip to a Christmas Market in Germany, but am not sure which would be the best one to go to, any suggestions ??

Definitely Nürnberg. The most traditional one. Besides this, there are several quite nice christmas markets in Munich too (but the one around the Marienplatz is very%26quot;commercialized%26quot; - try the one at Haidhauser Platz). Also Stuttgart has a very large, diverse and nice christmas market.

Living in Stuttgart, I will always recommend its Christmas Market. It is one of the oldest, largest and prettiest in Germany. I usually visit it 4-5 times a week as I enjoy its pretty decorated stalls, the food and drink, and the iceskating rink. I personally would choose a Christmas Market to visit based on other things to do and see there as I believe that they are at their best in the evening. Stuttgart offers a lot of other attractions besides the Christmas Market making it a good choice to visit. Germanwings has flghts from London Stanstead to Stuttgart for as little as 19 euros one way.

Having lived for 6 years in germany I think many of the markets are much of a muchness, generally selling the same things with the usual gluhwein and sausages. What makes one better than others is the backdrop ie cathedral / Dom or rathaus etc. Living near dusseldorf I%26#39;ve visited the Aachen one a few times which is recommended and you can see Koln / cologne nearby again a good one - very full of uk coach parties. If you drive here you could then travel to holland to see an underground market in the caves at Valkenburg!
There seem to be coach trips advertised in uk papers which may be a cheap way of doing them or pick an area where there are quite a few major markets close together, as most small towns have christmas markets. Enjoy.

All depends on how much time you will have and a car or will you just be going to one market ? There are many good markets, which was stated that many of the items are the same at all the markets but the atmosphere is a big part of the experience. You can also get a special item based on the market or experience the local custom based on the market. If you can give us a little more info on your travel plans.

I have just returned from Aachen Christmas Market and loved it. I was there on Saturday, Dec.03, so it was really crowded. I suggest to visit during the week, otherwise you will have to share it with a lot of people, but in a very nice and happy atmosphere.

Just returned from Germany and MANY different Christmas markets. Biggest dissapointment was the Nurnberg Market. WAY too crowded. You couldn%26#39;t even get close to a stall because the crowd would push you by. On top of that the items being sold were not very special, same old stuff as everywhere else. It was very commercial and over priced, even had a stall from Atlanta Georgia USA. We only stayed one night then left. The city looks nice, but would want to visit when the christmas market is over. We hit 7 different city christmas markets. Hands down Salzburg had the most charming and fun market in Bavaria. There were also many special things to buy, not just the same old thing. Even my husband enjoyed Salzbug christmas market, which is saying alot.

I thought Salzburg was in Austria :(...
What kind of stuff did they have at Atlanta stall in Nuremberg?

Atlanta is a twin town of Nuremberg.

I didn%26#39;t know that Nurnberg was our twin sister city. Thanks for the info.
Salzburg is in Austia, but also part of Bavaria, just over the border from Germany.
The Atlanta stall in Nurnberg sold Coca Cola stuff and Cartoon Network items.
