I will be visiting Frankfurt with my wife over on 30th December for 2 nights, and fancy taking a day trip out of the city to one of the nearby towns. From other forum posts I think Heidelberg would be worth a visit.
Do I need to book train tickets in advance to get the best prices, or can we just turn up on the day?? Is there any train/route that people recommend??
Thanks in advance

There are direct IC or RB trains.
If you like it cheaper select as means of transport %26quot;only local transport%26quot;.
If you can make your trip on Sa (31.) or Su (1.) you could use the Happy-Weekend-Ticket. This ticket is valid Saturdays or Sundays for all local trains (S-Bahn, RB, RE, VIA) in Germany. Valid for up to 5 persons travelling together.
EUR 30,00
The Happy-Weekend-Ticket does also cover the trams and buses in Heidelberg (but not in Frankfurt).
If you like a more scenic route give in %26quot;Eberbach%26quot; as a via station. Odenwald-Bahn (by VIAS GmbH) through the Odenwald, from Eberbach to Heidelberg in the Neckar Valley

(and click on %26quot;der neue Alltag%26quot;
This line was just (11.12.2005) reopened with new trains after closure for a year or so.
Neckar valley has a number of nice castles, e.g. in Neckarsteinach (4 next to each other)

S-Bahn crossing the Neckar on this route (also fairly new, service started Dec. 2003)
