Neuschwanstein

Just reading a previous entry about Neuschwanstein as my husband and myself will be in Fussen from 24-27 December, hoping for a white Christmas!! We were not going to go into Neuschwanstein itself, but I am not sure now. I did read somewhere that they were a LOT of steps to climb during the tour. Does anyone know if that is true?

We will take the advice and get there early. I will have to check to see if tickets are still available for the 27th if there are not too many steps. So looking forward to spending time in that area. We will have been in Rothenburg previously and coming down by train.

More challanging is the way up to the castle.

But there you can use a bus or horse carriage.

There are definitly some staircases up and down in the castle. And the rooms are higher than in a normal house. Personally I wouldn%26#39;t call this a lot.

You can take a carraige up, but the last part you still have to walk. There are ALOT of stairs if stairs are an issue for you. I didn%26#39;t find it a problem, but I walk all the time. You start by going up a flight of stairs. Then part way through you go up 3 large flight of stairs, all circular tower. Then you have to go down. Actually the walk up and down the hill was more difficult for me because it was icy. I would recommend going to see the castle, especially if you are in Fussen, but there are many stairs and the walk down the hill can be scary if the weather isn%26#39;t very good.

Yes, there are a fair number of stairs on the tour in the castle. At the time of her visit, my 80 year old mother with heart problems had to quit during the tour as the stairs were too much for her. Getting to the entrance to the castle itself is no problem if using the horse carriages, but still there is a fair uphill walk after they drop you off. One year there was a shoveled path through the snow in the forest on the hillside leading from the parking area at the bottom of the hill up to the castle. It was a pleasant walk up to, and around the castle, because it was the one day of the year the castle is closed and no one else was around.

The horse carriage ride is very crowded and they pack lots of people, and you%26#39;ll have to still climb up the slope after the ride. If you take the bus, you%26#39;ll be walking downhill after you get off the bus, and a much nicer approach to the castle for the walk.
