Can you suggest other small charming Romantic Road towns in addition to Rothenburg that should be visited? We only have time for one or two.

Nördlingen im Ries

Quite in the middle of the %26quot;Ries%26quot; - a huge meterorite impact crater.

Are you driving or dependent on the train? If driving then my priorities would be (1)Dinkelsbuehl, (2) Noerdlingen. If you have to rely on trains, then Wuerzburg would be a possibility. Its not small, but has a great location and many sights.
If you are driving and coming from Frankfurt, get off the autobahn before Aschaffenburg (Stockstadt exit) and follow the Main river on its south bank to Miltenberg and Wertheim. Both are small and quite romantic old towns.

thanks for replies. Treplow: I%26#39;m trying to decide whether to drive or rely on trains, buses. Any thoughts? I%26#39;m wondering how difficult it is to drive--find one%26#39;s way, traffic, parking etc, especially in the small towns. I%26#39;ve never rented a car in Europe but I am used to big city driving in the US. I think train, bus might be more relaxing but could see that driving would be quite convenient in terms of flexibility.

When visiting small towns driving is best because you can visit for as long or as short a time as you want without your visit being dictated by the timing of public transportation. You should have no real problems driving in Germany, just make sure not to be run over if blocking the fast lanes on the autobahn (keep to the right except when passing).
Wherever you decide to go, the roads should be clearly marked and parking places also when you arrive. There are a lot of interesting places to visit by Rothenburg ob der Tauber, you don%26#39;t have to limit yourself to just the Romantic Road. Get some books on Germany which have good pictures and pick places that interest you. I enjoy Noerdlingen more than Dinkelsbuehl, but after seeing Rothenburg why visit another similar walled town, but not nearly as nice? Schwaebisch Hall and the nearby walled Comburg Monastery might be a better choice. Schwabisch Hall viewed from the new modern art museum offers a very nice contrast between the new and the old. Although a larger city, the Residence in Wuerzburg is definitely worth visiting.

I agree with marcopolko re driving. Also, Schwaebisch Hall is another good suggestion. From there you could pick up the Burgenstrasse(castle route) along the Neckar to Heidelberg.
