where to go, 3rd time to Germany?

Our family went to Germany the past 2 summers. We spent 3 weeks in Bavaria/Salzburg, then last summer we spent 2 weeks along the Rhine and Mosel area. We have also been to Heidelberg.

Where should we go for 2 weeks this summer? What%26#39;s an interesting area? Our kids are older teenagers.

Berlin is wonderful. You cd spend a week there (easily) and maybe go up to the Baltic coast: seaside resorts and Hanseatic towns (Lübeck, Rostock etc).

I have been travelling to Germany for years and have visited numerous cities, towns and villages right across the country. There is simply so much to see and do in Germany that you could probably pick anywhere and have a wonderful holiday.

Of all German cities, Berlin (as Lynda quite rightly says) is truly number one. There%26#39;s nowhere on Earth, never mind Germany, that%26#39;s quite like it. There is enough sightseeing to be done to keep you busy for at least a week - the highlights being the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie, East Side Gallery (a mile stretch of the Berlin Wall that still stands in its original place), Schloss Charlottenburg and the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Memorial-Church. In terms of entertainment, Berlin is to Germany what London is to England - simply the best. The bars stay open till 4am; there are two zoos and two cinemas showing films in their original languages; and there are restaurants serving cuisines from aroung the world.

Other regions that I rank highly in Germany for vacationing purposes are Hamburg, Munich (München), Cologne (Köln) and the Black Forest (Schwarzwald).

I agree with the others ... why not visit Berlin for a few days or a week. Not too far away from Berlin are quite a few nice areas where you easily can spend the other week.

Baltic Coast

Mecklenburgische Seenplatte (an area with heaps of lakes north of Berlin)

Spreewald

Sächsische Schweiz (Saxon Switzerland)

As you%26#39;ve already been to the south of Germany twice I would suggest to go to the North now. The Baltic Sea and the North Sea are both great and if you don%26#39;t like to spend all your holiday on the coast you could visit Berlin, Hamburg (bigger cities) or Bremen, Lübeck or Lüneburg (smaller but very nice - and old - cities). Although, as far as Lübeck is concerned, it is close to the Baltic Sea - so you could combine seeing Lübeck with a holiday at the Baltic Sea.

If you do head north, make a stop along the way at Goslar. Its small size and pedestrian zone make it one of the most walkable towns that visited in Germany. It is filled with half-timber homes and fewer tourists than similar sites to the south.

If you are into walks along the sea, I can also recommend the dike along the mouth of Weser River north of Bremerhaven. A bird book is handy and the song of the skylarks are worth the trip. Cuxhaven is a nice small port north of Bremerhaven.

Just across the border from Germany into Jutland, Denmark, are two towns that I liked: Ribe and Abenra. Ribe has half-timber houses, cobble stone streets and a cathedral (from 948 AD) that looks a hodge-hodge of styles from the outside but quite stunning from the interior. Abenra is an interesting port town that reminds me of a popeye cartoon with its white washed shops and houses.

The sights in northern Germany and Denamrk are not as breath-taking as the castles in the south or along the Rhine but for me as appealing in a quieter way.

I spent 7 days in and around Freiburg last September and it was one of the best holidays I%26#39;ve had in years. We travelled west as far as Lake Constance and wished we had had another week to explore that area alone! Unfortunately, we didn%26#39;t get to Heidelberg but we plan to go there this year as we%26#39;re returning to the Black Forest area for another week then going up to Koblenz for a week.

Freiberg is a lovely city, very friendly with lots to do and see. Titisee (lake), Triberg (waterfall) and Felbrig (big mountain) are 3 places to visit but there%26#39;s so much to do and the Lake Constance area has so many places to visit you could spend a week there (lots of watersports and fine old buildings).

Take a look at the area, you%26#39;ll be pleasantly surprised.

You might like to try the Stuttgart area and Bsden-Wuerttemberg. THere%26#39;s easily enough to do for two weeks. Click on my name for recent posts about this area. The Bodensee (Lake Constance) and Black Forest are also nice but I don%26#39;t usually discuss them in this forum.
