How far from Munich to neuschwantsetin castle?

How far from Munich to the castles via car?

Is it necessary to make a reservation during Ocktoberfest due to crowds?

How long would you allow for each castle?

Thanks

It is always recommendable to make an online reservation for Neuschwanstein. Has nothing to do with Octoberfest and everything with busloads of tourists... Hohenschwangau castle isn%26#39;t that crowded. You can see both of them in a day.

We picked up a rental car at the Hauptbahnhof, drove to Schwangau, toured Hohenschwangau Castle at 12:45 and Neuschwanstein Castle at 14:50. The tour times, in English, were spaced out by the ticket office so that we could do both on the same afternoon. We spent the night before driving to Garmish on the next AM but could have returned to Münich that evening.

The web does not list what time the English tours start - should we just plan on arriving when it opens?

How long did you tour the castles?

Arrive mid-morning and go to the ticket office. They will give you the next time available for a tour in German, English or with an Audio guide for other languages. They will space the times out so that you can do both in one day - allowing about 2 hours between entrance times. You can only go on the tour at the time shown on the ticket.

It is a steep walk up to each castle. Take the horse drawn carriage up to the entrance to Hohenschwangau castle and walk back down to the ticket office. There is a charge for the carriage.

Take the bus up to the Neuschwanstein bus stop. From there it is about a 15 minute walk, past the path to Marien bridge, to the castle. The walk here is up and down but not steep. Go to the bridge on the way back to the bus stop. There is a charge for the bus.
