I thought that Berlin was now supposed to only have one international airport situated on the site of the current Flughafen Schönefeld. Tegel and Tempelhof were due to have ceased operations and Schönefeld was to be renamed Berlin-Brandenburg International (BBI). Has this plan now been abandoned?
I have to admit that Berlin desperately need a new airport. Flughafen Tegel, which seems to deal with the majority of international arrivals and departures in the German capital, is, in my opinion, far too compact to continue to deal with the demand. Tempelhof is far too close to the city centre and should really have been closed long ago.
Currently most inter-continental flights to Germany are handled by Frankfurt and Munich, thus meaning that many people have no direct route to Berlin. It is time Berlin had the capacity to handle the same passenger turnover as that of other European capitals such as London and Paris.

zThe plans are still there. Everything moves very slowly, because of public protest (people who live near the airport, people who work at Tempelhof, etc.).

BBI is due to commence operations in 2011 provided the Federal Constitution Court in Leipzig rules in favour of the new airport. Final decision is expected in February. Construction is to start right after a favourable court ruling.

Locals owning houses around the Schoenefeld airport having been fighting against the next door airport for many years, saying there is another option in Sperenberg (further away from Berlin). The question is in a number of different responsabilities, why it is a never ending story in favor of those few, and the voice of the many living with the inner city airport noise remains unheard. I can hardly wait for Tempelhof to shut down...
