Hotel near Neuschwanstein Castle in Winter?

My husband and I will be in Germany in late February/early March and plan to spend a few days in Bavaria (Feb 24-26). Neuschwanstein Castle is high on the list of things we would like to see.

We%26#39;d like to stay somewhere nearby (preferably with wonderful views). The Hotel Mueller looked perfect, unfortunately, it is not open in February.

Do you have any suggestions for other hotels that would offer views of the castles and ideally transportation to them? We are celebrating our 20th anniversary and my husband%26#39;s 65th birthday, so we are looking for something nice.

We do not plan to rent a car, but travel by train from Munich and then rely on our feet, taxi or public transportation.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

One of our very favorite places to stay in Europe is at Haus Weiher in Hohenschwangau. We have stayed there with the Oswald family five or six times in the last ten years. Nice rooms, a great breakfast, reasonable prices, and a lovely family make this a perfect home while visiting the castles. The last e-mail address we had was haus.weiher@arcor.de

We were last there in the spring of 2004 and really enjoyed our visit. Although we don%26#39;t speak much German and Frau Oswald doesn%26#39;t speak a lot of English, we%26#39;ve never had any trouble understanding each other. And now that Herr Oswald--who speaks English very well-- has retired, even the most detailed questions can be asked.

We have a few photos and comments from the Haus Weiher on our web pages (warobison.com) Go to the Travel Album Section and then choose the Student trips to Germany in %26#39;92 and %26#39;94. But for more information, do a Google search for Haus Weiher and then go to Bavaria Ben%26#39;s site.

Good luck and have a great trip.

Thank you very much. The Haus Weiher looks very lovely. Can you tell me if it is more of a %26quot;bed %26amp; breakfast%26quot; type establishment? That is what it appears as I look on Google.

Is transportation readily available and do the Oswald%26#39;s help with castle reservations, etc.?

Thanks so much for your reply. I will try to locate Bavaria Ben%26#39;s site... that is a new one to me!

One final question.... can someone give me an idea of the weather to expect in late Feb/early Jan?

Thanks again,

Kathy

It is more like a bed and breakfast than a hotel. The family lives on the bottom floor of the house, and the guestrooms are on the second floor. The guestrooms open onto a balcony with Neuschwanstein looming above.

You%26#39;ll take the train to Fuessen. There is a bus from Fuessen to Hohenschwangau, but with your luggage, it%26#39;s easier and not very expensive to just take a taxi. If you decide to stay there, it might be possible to make arrangements with the Oswalds to pick you up at the Fuessen station.

If you%26#39;re going in January or February, it shouldn%26#39;t be necessary to reserve the castles. The castle ticket office is right in the village and is only about a five or ten minute walk from the Weiher.

Bavaria Ben%26#39;s site is www.bensbauernhof.com

We have an article on our website that%26#39;s a little out of date but will give you a bit more information about the Weiher and about visiting the castles. It%26#39;s at www.warobison.com/neu.html

It will likely be pretty cold and perhaps snowy. It makes the walks up to the castles a little harder, but the views are fantastic.

We visit Neuschwanstein frequently in February and after discovering the Villa Jaegerhaus now always stay there. It is an excellent hotel in the old hunting lodge for the castles, and the restaurant across the road in their associated hotel is also excellent. They do a lot of flaming food at the table if that interests you. The hotel sits immediately adjacent to Hohenschwangau Castle and quite close to Neuschwanstein Castle with excellent views of both if you get a NE corner room. Get a room on an upper floor so that you can leave your curtains open for the excellent views of the lit up castles by night. The horse carriages to Neuschwanstein leave a short distance away. It would be a wonderful place to celebrate. Neuschwanstein Castle in the snow is lovely!!!!!

Be aware that the Swan Grotto at Linderhof palace nearby will probably be closed in February. If you go in the opposite direction of Neuschwanstein, there is a nice small lake a short distance away.

Thank you Marcopolko. I found the Villa Jaegerhaus during my research and it seems just what we are looking for. I am happy to hear your impression of it!

We will be arriving by train from Cologne on Sunday Feb 26 (we%26#39;ve changed our itinerary a bit). I assume we should arrive in Fussen and take a taxi to the hotel?

Thank you again for your input!

As to Fuessen to Neuschwanstein, living in Stuttgart we just drive our car when we visit, but have also used taxis there. A taxi shouldn%26#39;t be too expensive, it%26#39;s a fairly short distance, and there is also bus service between Fuessen and Hohenschwangau. If you have a lot of luggage the taxi would be preferable, as the bus stop (if I%26#39;m correct where I think it is) could be a fair ways away from the hotel, certainly easily walkable with little luggage. If the bus trip is not included in your train tickets, then for two people the taxi shouldn%26#39;t be much more expensive.

Neuschwanstein is closed for one day in February (at least one time when we visited), I believe toward the first of the month so you probably will be OK, but you could check with the hotel or the ticket office for the castles to make sure that it is open when you plan to visit. We have visited when we knew it was closed and it was wonderful, walking around the outside of the castle in the snow and not seeing another person.

You should have a wonderful trip. I envy you as we are unable to revisit this year.
