Zugspitze and fear of heights

Please- If I%26#39;m terrified of heights, will I be OK going to Zugspitze? Everyone wants to go up in the cable car. I understand there is a short and long version of the cable car. Are these with seats? Is it really scary?

There is not %26quot;short and long version%26quot;, there is a cable car directly from the Eibsee to the summit and a rack railway to the Platt, appr. 400 m below the summit, which is connected to the summit by another short cable car. The trains have seats of course, the cable car doesn%26#39;t (the train ride takes about 45 min, the cable car needs 7-8 minutes, so no need for seats). It is a large cab for around 50-100 people.

As to %26quot;is it really scary%26quot; - nobody can answer that except you. Don%26#39;t look out of the window...

The Eibseebahn is much steeper and higher above the ground than the Gletscherbahn.

The cabins of the cable cars have no seats, at max. a few folding seats at their walls.

Scary?

Individual humans react totally different on this. Some people are scared to climb 1 m up a ladder. There is nothing you have to be scared about.

Strange as it may be, I am a pilot and have no problem at 8,000 feet in a small Cessna, but I do not feel comfortable being up on a roof or using a tall ladder.

Thanks for the information. I%26#39;m going to research this and go for it. I think the cable car will be OK if it%26#39;s only 8 mns long. I%26#39;ll just grin and bear it. I think once I%26#39;m up there it%26#39;ll be worth it. I just have a vertigo kind of feeling sometimes when I%26#39;m in certain situations.

Thanks for the web address- It looks like it%26#39;s got lots of details.

Will there still be snow on April 4th (or around there) ? Also, is it really cold in early April down on the ground around Mittenwald, Munich and Innsbruck? Thank You!! Angela

On the Austrian side of the Zugspitze is the less-crowded Talstation Obermoos just above the village of Erwald. The tram takes you to the top in 10 minutes and when we were there in June 2004 it cost 31 Euro and runs every 20 minutes. You probably should rent a car if you want to try the Austrian side as it is more remote. Buses do connetct from the Erhwald train station and run hourly. Driving there is very easy however. Take your coat with you even in the summer as it can be very cold and possibly sleeting or snowing as it did on us in June.

As far as the heighth issue is concerned I%26#39;m sorry but I can%26#39;t help you. If being approximately 10,000 feet high exceeds your tolerance for scariness of heights then the advice given earlier about not looking down is good advice......but you just gotta go if you get that close.
