Saxony Switzerland..... Is it a secret?

We are flying to Berlin at the end of April and thought the area of Saxony Switzerland sounded like our sort of thing,(scenery, river boats, rural trams etc) Hasn%26#39;t anyone been there? I can%26#39;t find any reference to it on this site.

Is it feasible to take the train from Berlin to Bad Schandau and if we do, can we do it on one of the %26quot;Lander%26quot; tickets?

If anyone has got any information on this area, I%26#39;d welcome their advice. We%26#39;ll be needing some accommodation for 4 nights.

There are direct EC trains from Berlin to Bad Schandau.

You would need 2 Länder-Tickets to reach Bad Schandau: Brandenburg Ticket + Saxony Ticket.

Or use on a Saturday or Sunday the Happy-Weekend-Ticket (EUR 30,00. These tickets do cover however only local trains (S-Bahn, RB, RE, IRE). The EC trains are not covered.

Thanks Abalada.

Have you visited Saxony Switzerland? We stayed in Cologne last year and loved going on the boats on the Rhine, calling in at those lovely towns like Koenigswinter and Linz. Is this going to be something similar?

The Saechsische Schweiz (as it is called in German) is very pretty. We visited the Bastei and the Festung (castle) Koenigstein. We had a car, but there are also boat and train trips from Dresden, a city we liked so much that we have visited it twice so far.

I would recommend you to go by train from Berlin to Dresden and to stay one day in Dresden. It is a beautiful town and a day will not be enough for a visit but you can get some impressions.

From Dresden you can take a boat to the Sächsische Schweiz, there are modern and historical ones.

There are many small towns along the river like Königsstein with an old fortress or Rathen, where a well-known open air theatre is located, during the warm months you can visit a show there.

Use the link reisemarie.com/Deutschland/…

there you can find acommodations in the region.

The Sächsische Schweiz (Saxon Switzerland) is definitely worth a visit especially when you like hiking.

We%26#39;ve been there over Easter last year and had a pretty good time. We stayed in a little Pension (B%26amp;B) in Bad Schandau. We had only one full day so we took the tram to the Lichtenhainer Wasserfall (waterfall) from where we did a little walk to the %26quot;Kuhstall%26quot;. In the afternoon we took the Ostrauer Fahrstuhl (lift) to Ostrau where we had a wander around.

There are heaps of nice walks you can do, for example to the Schrammsteine. Or you could visit Königstein with it%26#39;s Festung (castle).

You can check out www.saechsische-schweiz.de (they have an English site as well) for more information.

It%26#39;s easy to get from Berlin to the Sächsische Schweiz. Some trains from Berlin to Prague stop at Bad Schandau. Otherwise you can take any train to Dresden and take a regional train from there to any of the towns in the Sächsische Schweiz. Not sure if you can use the Länderticket ... you should check that on www.bahn.de

Thanks. We are definitely going to do this trip. I looked on the DB site and we can get a train direct from the airport to Bad Schandau and it only takes less than 3 hours. That%26#39;s unbelievable. I thought it might be a bit tricky getting there. It looks as if we will have to pay the full fare though, as the Happy Weekend ticket wouldn%26#39;t cover this EC service and we arrive on a Sunday afternoon.
