We are flying into Munich and coming home out of Zurich. We will stay in Munich 2 days and train thru the Bavarian Apls. I want the kids to see Neuschwanstein castle and lots of beautiful mountains. Is a trip from Munich thru the Apls and to Innsbruck and then on to Zurich what we shoul try to do? Any wonderful places on the way we should see? Car or train?
Also Please, is it out of the question to see Rothenberg as a day trip from Munich? I don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s on the way south so maybe a day trip before we leave Munich.

Rothenburg is quite far for a day trip.
For a nice medieval city you could visit Landshut.

47 min by train.
Use the Bavaria Ticket (EUR 25,00) for this trips. Covers all local trains in Bavaria for a family. Also all local public transport in Munich.
Herrenchiemsee New Palace, also by King Ludwig II, is also nice and not far from Munich.

This castle is on the Herreninsel island in Lake Chiemsee. Nice views on the Alps from there if the weather is OK. More interesting from the interior than Neuschwanstein.
DB timetable

From: Munich
To: Herreninsel
If you want to use the Bavaria Ticket select as means of transport %26quot;only local transport%26quot;.
There is one way the timetable doesn%26#39;t consider: to walk the 1,8 km from Prien (train station) to Stock (harbour).
The Bavaria Ticket covers also the bus from Füssen to Hohenschwangau. Hohenschwangau is the bus stop for Neuschwanstein Castle.

From Füssen you can use a bus or taxi to Vils at the Ausserfernbahn train line. Bus is not frequent, but distance is short anyway.
The Ausserfernbahn goes to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
In Garmisch-Partenkirchen you can change to the Zugspitzbahn and make a round trip to the highest peak of Germany.

From Garmisch-Partenkirchen on to Mittenwald and Innsbruck. Mittenwald is one of the nicest towns in the Alps.

From Innsbruck you have direct trains to Zürich.
This route Munich - Füssen - Vils - Garmisch-Partenkirchen - Mittenwald - Innsbruck - Zürich is not a short one. The trains on these routes are rather slow.
Not for one day. Esp. not with kids. But these places are all way more interesting than Zürich.
