Hello from New Zealand
My wife and I are visiting the Black Forest next June. We are looking for a true Black Forest experience but without the crowds. can someone recommend to me a nice area where we can enjoy the surroundings without the masses.

Dear Redbeach,
Having traveled in Germany many times, I love the little village of Sasbachwalden located between Baden-Baden and Offenburg. It is easily reached by car or by train and then a taxi, bus or car. Small in size, but beautiful with flower and the vineyards. Have a great trip next summer. I will be there again in May.

Lots of great villages with what you seek: I like Gengenbach (just outside Offenburg)--it is easily reached by train from Offenburg. There is great hiking from there, and there are lovely day trips up the valley by train. It is a town that Germans like to go to rather than other tourists but is still small enough to have an off-the-beaten-track feel to it. A bonus is the accessibility to other towns and to the rail and bus service. Of course, there are many beautiful villages: very small would be St. Margen, which is right up in the mountains about 25 minutes by bus from Freiburg (a little too small for my tasts).
